Peter Guarnaccia to speak on mental health in Latinos April 17

Guest speaker Peter Guarnaccia, Ph.D., will discuss “Nervios and ataques de nervios among Puerto Ricans: problems and promise of creating culture-specific diagnostic systems” on Wednesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. in Dan Rogers Hall, rm. 134.

 

The event presents a discussion about mental health among Latino individuals in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Specifically, Guarnaccia will examine the multiple experiences of nervios as an idiom of distress and a marker of social and psychiatric vulnerability.

 

Peter Guarnaccia is a medical anthropologist who teaches at Rutgers University. He is also an investigator at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. The event is sponsored by AddRan College, the Sociology & Anthropology department and Latino/a Studies.
