Dr. Suzy Lockwood of the TCU nursing faculty

Suzy Lockwood has been named a Healthcare Hero by the Fort Worth Business Press for her commitment to oncology research and education and was honored at a dinner Feb. 18.

Dr. Lockwood, who joined the TCU faculty in 1997, organized, designed and launched the Center for Oncology Education and Research (COER) in an effort to provide opportunities for collaborative learning and research between faculty, students and community partners about cancer care and end-of-life issues.

"Professor Lockwood's faculty and students applaud her leadership that has resulted in numerous accomplishments for the Harris College and the oncology field,” said Paulette Burns, dean of the Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences. "Her achievements and dedication to students and faculty in oncology education and research over the course of her career make her a health care hero."

Through her efforts, TCU nursing students hoping to specialize in oncology care upon graduating are currently being placed in internships that will enable them to explore treatment and care of cancer patients through the COER. This provided an opportunity for the students to explore the specialty, which resulted in nursing students choosing oncology after graduation.

Dr. Lockwood is a tireless educator and provides community outreach for the non-medical community, giving presentations on cancer prevention focusing on women’s health to such organizations as the Texas Nurses Association and area hospitals.

Dr. Lockwood is an active researcher in the oncology field, including being an emerging leader with focusing on increasing cancer survivorship. She has been published in numerous nursing and oncology journals. In addition, she has also been active in many nursing and oncology organizations on the local, regional and national levels. She earned a BSN from TCU, a MSN in nursing administration from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Ph.D. in urban affairs with a nursing focus from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Fort Worth Business Press’ Healthcare Heroes is an annual award that recognizes excellence in the healthcare community from throughout the Tarrant County area.
