Thursday is Alcohol Screening Day
Published: 4/5/2010

For the past 10 years, the TCU Alcohol & Drug Education Center has provided free alcohol screenings and substance use/abuse information to the TCU community on National Alcohol Screening Day.  National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) is designed to call attention to the impact that alcohol has on overall health.  This year, NASD is Thursday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  on the 2nd floor of the University Union.  This program aims to encourage students and others in the community to take a look at the way they use alcohol, so that they may take steps to reduce their alcohol intake.

Note the following national statistics:
•    Alcohol–related crashes (i.e., those in which a driver or pedestrian had a blood alcohol concentration [BAC] greater than zero) account for 41 percent of all fatal car accidents.
•    In 2002, 64% of full-time college students (aged 18-22) reported consuming at least one alcoholic drink in the past 30 days.
•    Over 44% of full-time college students reported consuming five or more drinks on the same occasion at least once in the past 30 days.
•    1700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes.
•    Nearly 600,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol.
•    Nearly 700,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted each year by another student who has been drinking.

Through programs like NASD, ADE hopes to raise campus awareness about alcohol, educate the community about symptoms and resources, provide quick alcohol screenings in an accessible location, and connect those in need to applicable resources.  If you or someone you know would like to participate in NASD, come by the BLUU on April 8th, between 10am and 2pm.  However, TCU students can complete an alcohol and other drug assessment at any time at the TCU Alcohol & Drug Education Center, University Recreation Center basement, #049.  For questions or more information, call Sparkle Greenhaw at ext. 7100.
