Published: 12/15/2011

More than 150 area tuba and euphonium players will present the 23rd annual Fort Worth MERRYTUBACHRISTMAS concert at noon Thursday, Dec. 22.  The performance has been moved from downtown this year and will take place outside Jarvis Hall.

Anyone who plays the tuba, sousaphone, euphonium, or baritone horn is invited to perform in this concert.  Registration is from 9-9:45 a.m., followed by a music rehearsal from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.  Registration and rehearsal will take place at Ed Landreth Auditorium, corner of University Drive and West Cantey Street on the TCU.  There is a $5 registration fee for participants who should dress for the weather and bring a music lyre and instrument strap.  The music performed will be from CAROLS FOR A MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS used at all official MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS concerts.  The books may be purchased at registration for $18.

The free concert is open to the public, and presented by the DFW area chapter of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association and the Harvey Phillips Foundation.  Local sponsorship and assistance is provided by Brook Mays Music Company, McKay Music, Mr. E’s Music, Houghton Music, and TCU.

Guest conductor will be Dr. Steven Harlos, coordinator of Piano and Collaborative Piano at the University of North Texas in Denton, and staff keyboardist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.  Master of ceremonies will be media personality Alex Burton.

TUBACHRISTMAS concerts are performed annually in over 150 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada.  These concerts were conceived by the great tuba player/teacher Harvey Phillips (1929-2010), and are presented as a tribute to his teacher who was born on Christmas Day in 1902.  That man, “Bill” Bell, is recognized by all musicians as the dean of tuba players throughout the world.
