Film professor Dr. Joan McGettigan grew up in Philadelphia and taught at Penn State before arriving at TCU in 1997.

At Fall Convocation, Chancellor Boschini focused on TCU’s “culture of connection” and the TCU Promise.  Every day, hundreds of faculty, staff and students fulfill the elements of the promise, making this university the great place it is. Joan McGettigan (Film, Television & Digital Media) is another example of making that promise work on a day-to-day basis.

A TCU professor since 1997, Joan’s teaches FTDM classes in production, history and business as well as sections that focus on a specific genre of movie such as musicals, crime and other such Hollywood staples. She also hosts the popular Thursday night series of free films that the Fort Worth community enjoys.

The former student who nominated her says “Joan is what all university professors should strive to become: a passionate expert who makes you want to share their love of the subject matter and continue learning more about the topic long after the semester ends.”

At the same time, he notes (and Joan confirms) she has somewhat of a reputation for being a taskmaster. “I try to get students to go beyond the basics and learn how to find things out on their own and a lot of them are not prepared for that. But when they come back and take another class with me, I know they get it.”

If you would like to submit names of faculty and/or staff who exemplify the TCU Promise, please e-mail s.record@tcu.edu and include a brief description of that person’s contributions.  Here are the elements of the TCU Promise:

The TCU Promise is a reciprocal commitment to excellence through discovery and achievement that unites the TCU community.

TCU faculty and staff commit to providing:
    Relevant and challenging curricula
    Energetic and innovative learning opportunities
    An invigorating social milieu
Practicing high standards of personal behavior while engaging in intellectual curiosity and active learning

The University commits to:
Nurturing a safe and diverse environment that is committed to:
    The free exchange of ideas
The discovery and dissemination of knowledge
The encouragement and recognition of creative and scholarly distinction

By upholding the TCU Promise, faculty, staff and students ultimately create a unique environment on campus and it's what we like to call the TCU Experience.
